Sinn 857 Watch

I just got finished using a German proxy server to trick Sinn's website into thinking I was viewing it from their homeland. Why did I do this? To get the price of this new 857 collection watch for you. Sinn apparently uses geo-locating to protect their prices from being viewed by potential buyers outside of Germany. Probably because those prices vary from country to country. Nevertheless, I am still going to tell you the prices as that is only fair.

To my knowledge Sinn hasn't hard-launched the new 857 and 857 S watch collection yet. Though, the pieces are right up there on their website. These are a more simple version of the existing 857 UTC models which contained a small central GMT hand. What the 857 really is however is an upgraded and larger version of the 657 and 657 S - a watch I proudly own but simply do not wear any longer as it is too small. Overall the 857 is going to be a very solid seller for Sinn based on its design and upgraded features over the 657 family.

The 857 and 857 S ("S" stands for "schwarz," or "black") have dials which represent the core aviator dial look that has been made popular by a lot of brands. It is a look taken from cockpit dashboard clocks - a fact Bell & Ross has done an excellent job of communicating with us all. It is actually a polarizing look. Some people find this dial design extremely boring, while I personally love it. I also love the high-durability case and rotating bezel. It makes the 857 look like a hybrid between a diver and pilot watch.

The 657 S which I have had for a few years is 41mm wide in steel with a matte black PVD coating. The 857 and 857 S is sized up to 43mm wide and done in Tegimented steel. This is Sinn's name for their steel hardening process. This is a rather significant upgrade to the 857 over the 657. Other upgrades include Sinn's "Ar" case dehumidifying capsule (which removes any moisture from inside the case to prevent the dial from fogging up), as well as a new "Captive pilot's bezel." This bezel is supposed to work better and be more secure than older versions. The case is also water resistant to 200 meters, highly anti-magnetic, as well as shock resistant.

The dial design is mostly the same for the two models, except that the 857 series now includes the "Made in Germany" label on the dial. Another new feature is the movement. Sinn has moved away from the Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic, to the high-end ETA 2892-A2 automatic. There isn't a huge difference, but the 2892 is considered a better movement. I really do love the look of this piece and Sinn ensures a high-quality experience fitting for one of the world's best tool watch brands. By the way, I really like the massive amount of AR coating they use on their sapphire crystals.

The Sinn 857 and 857 S models are available on a range of straps, but you really want the available steel or PVD black steel bracelets. Though the silicone strap is a good choice for many sport activities. I don't think the 857 range is meant to replace the 657, but rather to add a slightly higher-end and larger alternative. I will be seriously looking at these in the near future. Price for the Sinn 857 is 1,380 - 1,585 Euros depending on the strap/bracelet, and prices for the Sinn 857 S is 1,530 - 1,815 Euros.
